| History |
The Institute of Materials
Engineering was founded in 1993 with 10 graduate students
working on their M.S. program under the supervision of 7 faculty
members. The Ph.D. program was established in 1997. Research
fields and curricula included corrosion and corrosion control,
amorphous materials, nanoscience, nanotechnology, surface
modification, welding technique, construction materials and
cement-based composite materials.
| Features |
The Institute has the following
important features.
• Covers a wide range of
research topics, including corrosion, amorphous materials,
nanotechnology, surface modification, welding technique,
construction materials and cement-based composite materials.
• Offers research-oriented
academic programs to M.S. and Ph.D. students and provides them
many opportunities to participate in officially sponsored
research projects or to pursue their own specific areas of
research.
• Allows students to
familiarize themselves with important research skills needed to
become proficient in their advanced studies and professional
careers.
| Educational Goals |
The M.S. program is designed so that
students are well-prepared for careers as materials scientists
and engineers in industry and government. We provide an advanced
background in materials engineering as well as experimental
skills necessary for future careers in industry, government,
research and development institutes. Many students continue on
to Ph.D. program.
The Ph.D. program is intended to
prepare students for research-based careers in industry,
academia and government. Each student's program of study is
arranged to suit his or her individual interest and background.
| Developmental Directions |
The Institute is directed to the
development of a wide range of research programs to better
prepare students for success in higher education and the job
market.
The Institute also plans to develop
undergraduate programs in the future so that a full scale of
educational programs can be provided to the students.

| Advanced Study and Career
Opportunities |
Advanced Study
Many students graduated from this
Institute have opportunities to pursue their Ph.D. degrees in
Taiwan and abroad, including the US , Japan
and Sweden .
Career Opportunities
Students graduated from this
Institute have career opportunities in many fields such as
microelectronics, TFT-LCD and steel manufacturers. They often
receive at least two offers from the industries when applying
for jobs. In addition, some of students are now teaching in
universities and high schools.
